I am writing to express my support for the Vista Sands Solar Project.

The Vista Sands Solar Project creates opportunity to invest in central Wisconsin, while also producing clean energy and long-term environmental benefits for current and future generations. The proposed Project will be located on land lease from local families, providing economic opportunity and long-term stability for local landowners who have chosen to participate in the Project. It will bring a total capital investment of over $1 billion, while creating approximately 500 jobs during construction.

If built to its proposed capacity, the project will result in $6.5 million in annual payments to local governments, providing substantial investment in local services and infrastructure. The financial resources and economic development that Vista Sands Solar brings to the region through the utility aid dollars and other direct spending will provide a major boost to the local economy and allow for additional support to schools, roads, and other vital community services.

The developers of Vista Sands Solar have prioritized wildlife that live in and around the Project area. Since 1850, the vast majority of Wisconsin’s grasslands have been lost to agriculture and urban development and many conservation groups, including the National Audubon Society, have declared that climate change is “the single greatest threat to birds and other species.” Vista Sands Solar now presents a unique opportunity to advance both Wisconsin’s renewable energy goals and conservation efforts – by restoring approximately 6,500 acres of agricultural lands near the Buena Vista Wildlife Area to native grasslands, while also eliminating the use of fertilizer and pesticides associated with farming activities. These actions, when combined with other wildlife commitments by the Project, including avoiding constructing any panels within 1,000 feet of Greater Prairie-chicken leks and seasonal restrictions on construction and maintenance activities – suggest the benefits of this project will drastically exceed any impacts.
